Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) was established in 1989 in the name National Power Transmission Corporation Limited, which was later changed to the present name in 1992, to give a boost to power sector through transmission of power and proper distribution of it. Those days and few years after that there were big gaps in supply and demand for electricity. Development was almost crippled due to lack of power. Indians, during those days, were accustomed to long hours of power cut. After the liberalisation of economic policy in 1991, the power sector needed a boost to accommodate the new wave of industrialisation that was taking place very fast.
Power grid complied with the demand and today 50% of India’s total electrical power generated is transmitted through its national and interstate and regional grids. It is principally an electrical utility company headquartered in Gurgaon.
Power Grid presently owns and operates 95% of total interstate and inter-regional power transmission line in India. The big network of electricity supply lines runs over 80000 km of length across India. More than 150 electrical substations support this vast network.
Besides power transmission, PGCIL also has forayed into telecom business. Using its vast network it has laid fibre optic cable of more than 20000 km and has started leasing bandwidth to telecom companies of India.
